Skyfarms Australia

Urban Agriculture, green roof and living walls installations. Greening the cities, Providing Food Security and minimising the city greenhouse footprint

Skyfarms Australia's ethos

Skyfarms is engaged in helping to generate urban renewal by bringing large scale food production into the city. Eliminate food miles, excess packaging, cold storage and delivering freshness and vitality in high quality food. Skyfarms systems are locking in a modicum of food security for the urban dwelling populations of our world.
In 2008 resources to the rural production sector increased in cost by approximately two thirds in as little as four months, this has given rise to many in that sector of our national community giving up and loosing faith.
In reality they simply became unsustainable due to outdated production systems, conventional agriculture became economically imposable to run as of mid 2008. It will not take many more price rises to impact greatly on the availability of food to the average family.
Through holistic planing and implementation of the skyfarms systems we are developing ways to cut costs and deliver better quality food into the mouths of our future, our children.

2007; United Nations statisticians have stated, as a race we will have to increase our overall food production by over 110% within the next 10 years, this is one of the greatest challenges we will ever face in an increasingly unstable environment.

Natraponics systems are modular and stand alone. Requiring no grid power to set up or run, they harvest there own water and within 1 day of installation are put to work for food production.
The systems we have developed over the past 20 months are modular in design. We have achieved this using of the shelf components, and in most cases a team of 6 can install 10 hectares of systems in 3 days with no earthworks and generate no negative environmental impact. We require no grid power and in most cases can harvest our water directly from the atmosphere.
our systems are perfectly at home on top of a skyscraper in the middle of a megalopolis or in the middle of an environmental or human disaster zone.
10 hectares of systems can produce approximately 6.5 tonnes of fresh produce per week, they also produce usable power.
Depending on the humidity or condensation potential, we can even produce potable water where there was non prior.

Our mission

Is for Skyfarms to generate safe, sustainable systems to grow food, while eliminating harmful and unnecessary inputs.

Our Goals

To become large volume, producers of raw food of the highest quality, able to face the difficulties of the future, including times and situations of war flood, drought and earthquake. Ultimately delivering life opportunity to those unable to fend for them self, due to situations of extreme hardship, natural or military imposed. We believe everybody needs something, & if given the chance has something to give.

Sustainable Certification

Before large scale food production comes back into the city, we must be very careful not to invite any of the associated herbicides, fungicides, hormones that are so prevalent in the rural agricultural areas of most countries.
This is the reason why Skyfarms Australia are spearheading the push to generate and implement Sustainable standards for urban agriculture including development of methods to include Organic certification for natraponics soil based systems.
We believe the goal of sustainable certified safe food production will be seen before the end of 2009.

These systems have been designed to allow quick assembly not only for rooftop implementation into a skyfarm but also into refugee camps, and environmental disaster areas. They are designed to be put together in minutes to create an integrated system of one module or upwards of 100 hectares and be creating safe fresh food within 4 weeks of arrival without electricity connection and without need of major earth works, in the most difficult of environmental situations.
By adding fish to the system plate sized fish can be harvested within 5 months.

Why will agriculture return to the city?

Growing food in the city for the city will eliminate....

Food miles, excessive fuel usage in the growing and transport of food over long distances, minimise long term refrigeration storage and on farm packaging delivering further increments of sustainability to the world.
To make use of some urban wastes, and ensure continuing food supply to the cities, facilitate minimisation of the cities greenhouse footprint and to create a more peaceful aesthetic environment for the most important part of the city, its inhabitants.
There is nothing certain in an uncertain world and so in the times of great change all we can really do is our best to hang on and keep our eyes open.
